Hazel Mormont, the oldest child of Kestrel Marangoz and Calla Kaya. He, his mothers, his sisters Hawthorn and Ash, and his brother Laurel lived in Aurillac, Dalmasca - A bustling lakeside city famed for being a middle equidistant point between Rabanastre and Valnain. His mothers made their livelihoods as craftswomen and artisans, and Hazel grew up happily, surrounded by a loving, well-off family.When Hazel was a young man, just come of age by common standards and a ways into an carpentry apprenticeship, the Garleans waged their first offensive into the Skatay Range, and the invasion of Dalmasca began. Having been in Rabanastre for work with his mentor, Hazel immediately left the city once the fighting in the mountains turns into full-scale war and returned home, where he and his mothers joined the Dalmascan Resistance.Due to its advantageous location both between two major cities and in the middle of a large lake, Aurillac quickly became a hub for resistance activity and refugees alike. But the Garlean invasion was ruthless and calculated, and Dalmasca was a massive country, without enough warning to mobilize and defend herself. The Dalmascan Resistance was suffering catastrophic losses across the country, and when the Imperials turned their eyes to Aurillac, there was nothing anyone could do except hope there would be enough advance warning to flee the city before the legions descended upon them.Basch van Gabranth and the IVth Legion were tasked with the sacking of Aurillac. Nearly eighty percent of the population was wiped out by the invasion. Hazel survived through sheer luck - He happened to be out of the city at the time, doing reconnaissance malms away. He was never able to return, as after the city was taken, Castrum Dolorlacus was built over the ruins, and just like that, what used to be Hazel's home and stronghold of the resistance was turned into a fortress of the enemy, and he was alone.Hazel fought to the bitter end of the War for Dalmasca with the Resistance. When Nalbina Fortress fell, and with it the royal family, the Resistance shattered. The fighters scattered to the winds, with some joining the Doman Resistance, and some fleeing the continent altogether. After a close call with Livia sas Junius, the Witch of Dalmasca, cost Hazel his eye and all his troops, he recognized a losing battle. With a heavy heart Hazel left Dalmasca behind and made for Ilsabard, intent on joining the front lines of the fight against Garlemald where he could hit them hard and fast - The Bozjan Resistance.The Bozjan Resistance in the early days of the fight was nothing more than a few commando units of elite fighters striking Garlemald with guerilla warfare in key areas across Ilsabard while maintaining a foothold in the trenches. They never quite caught the attention of a legion, but the ground they gained in Bozja laid the groundwork for the eventual retaking of the whole front. Hazel worked his way through the ranks, eventually becoming a commander of his own squad. And so for years Hazel made war his life, a far cry from his upbringing, but it began to feel like all he knew.A few years into the fighting, Hazel's career in the Resistance was ended by a bomb that took out half his squad and left him comatose for weeks, waking up to find his left arm gone and a mechanical limb in its place, barely able to walk due to the severity of his burns. He was shipped off the Front to Thavnair to receive proper medical attention and rehabilitation, and he remained in a hospital on the Thavnairian coast for nearly six months.With no way to return to the Front (and fears that if he did, he'd simply be a liability due to his lack of practice while he'd been in physical therapy and rehabilitation), Hazel began taking simple bodyguarding mercenary jobs as a way to sharpen his skills and earn coin at the same time. He quickly gained a reputation for being one of the best bodyguards on the Thavnairian coast - Professional, affordable, fearless but not foolhardy, and best of all, unafraid to get on a ship and spend months on the open ocean. It was one of these jobs at sea that took him all the way to Eorzea, where he was surprised to find more adventuring and bodyguarding work than he could possibly accept in a lifetime.Bodyguard work gave Hazel a purpose again. It made him feel as if he was doing something good, something tangibly good, even if it wasn't fighting a war, and he often worked for dirt cheap simply for the contentment of knowing he helped someone. The reputation of the foreigner's blade willing to take no job too simple eventually made its way to the ears of one Thancred Waters, who after a period of careful investigation (spying initially, though they struck up a friendship soon after) deemed Hazel the perfect candidate to extend the job offer of the personal guard to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn's new member, the famed Primal Slayer, bane of cultists and Ascians and Garleans, and, well... You know the rest of this story, don't you?
